Why Locals Love East Street Cafe
Nestled inside the bustling Union Station at 50 Massachusetts Ave NE, Washington, DC, East Street Cafe offers an enticing journey through vibrant Asian flavors that satisfy both the palate and the soul. This Asian restaurant stands out not only for its authentic, fast-casual dining experience but also for its thoughtfully crafted menu that celebrates the richness of Japanese, Thai, and other Asian cuisines.
The culinary offerings at East Street Cafe burst with enticing textures and bold, layered flavors. Start with the delicate Jade Salad Japan, featuring crisp lettuce, refreshing cucumber, red radish, and sweet carrots, all harmonized by a nutty sesame dressing that awakens your taste buds. For something more robust, the Grilled Beef Salad Spicy from Thailand is a standout: tender slices of grilled steak mingle with crisp veggies like grape tomatoes and vibrant herbs like cilantro, all enlivened by a lemongrass vinaigrette that perfectly balances spice and zest.
Seafood lovers will find themselves drawn to the Salmon StirFry, where a tender, cornstarch-dusted salmon filet is stir-fried to perfection and glazed in a luscious house teriyaki sauce. The Shrimp Tempura offers a delightful contrast—lightly battered prawns and vegetables fried to a satisfying crunch and served with savory soy and ginger dipping sauce, a true testament to the mastery of texture and flavor.
Complementing these mains, the appetizers set an inviting tone. The Gyoza, available steamed or panfried, arrive golden and crisp or tender and juicy, paired with a fragrant sesame soy sauce that entices every bite. The East St. Fried Calamari, lightly battered and kissed with toasted black sesame seeds, is paired beautifully with a tangy hoisin-plum sauce, making it an addictive starter that draws guests back for more.
What truly elevates the East Street Cafe experience is its lively atmosphere combined with a remarkable efficiency that captures the fast-paced rhythm of Union Station. Diners often praise the transparency and energy of the open kitchen, where chefs prepare each dish to order with a quickness that’s almost theatrical. One customer noted how perfectly timed the service was—enjoying their meal within 20 minutes of ordering, making it an ideal stop for a tasty, fulfilling meal before catching a train.
Though tucked away on the second or third level, finding East Street Cafe is part of the adventure. Those who discover this gem delight in the combination of flavorful, generous portions and friendly, accommodating staff—the latter of whom eagerly customize dishes, such as the beloved Curry Laksa Noodle Soup, to suit personal dietary preferences. This soulful, aromatic soup blends rich broth, fresh vegetables, and noodles into a comforting bowl that has earned praise as one of the best quick eats in the station.
Whether you’re grabbing a quick bite between journeys or seeking a moment to savor complex Asian dishes crafted with fresh ingredients and genuine care, East Street Cafe promises a memorable meal that satisfies hunger and curiosity alike. Great spot in DC, the food is very tasty, well priced and the portions are massive! The food is prepared to order very quickly - you can see the kitchen and the chefs at work. The food was eaten by us within 20mins of ordering making it a perfect meal before the train.

This place is kind of difficult to find as it is in the 3rd level on Union Station. I dined here at 4:30pm on a Tuesday and the place was empty. I had the curry laksa noodle which I had never tried before. I'm not sure if this is how they serve it normally but it had two different kinds of noodles. The soup was a bit salty to my taste but it was filling and overall quite good. I would definitely go again if I have to wait before a train.

So tasty, what a gem!! I ordered the CURRY LAKSA NOODLE Soup, pictured. It can be all plant based - I asked for mushrooms, spinach and broccoli to be added/substituted for the chicken, and with no hesitation they accommodated me! I'm so pleased with this Union Station fast casual option, located on the second level. If you take the stairs opposite the Amtrak ticket counter, you'll find it with big open air seating. This dish also includes tofu, vegetables, rice sticks & egg noodle combination in a coconut curry broth, with bean sprouts, fresh! green beans, and corn. Amazing, and spicy warm. They have non spicy foods, too. I'll upload the current menu.

Eat in Union Station. Hot and fast Asian cuisine. We got dumpling soup and the Hong Kong Soup. Great service. Sweet view. Not too pricey.

I arrived to Union Station hungry and I am reviewing as I inhale my food so it may be biased. But to say the food is good is an understatement. This might be one of my top 15 meals I ever had. I ordered the Curry Luksa Noodle soup. It was delicious and arrived within 5 minutes of ordering. Had veggies, tofu, chicken and noodle - well rounded meal. Flavorful as well. Excited to stop by here again next time I am at Union Station.

A really pleasant surprise in Union Station, an alternative to sandwiches, fast food. Very diverse oriental menu. Both my and my spouses dishes were very tasty, served up quickly, and really ample (burp!). Most tables out in the open of the station so ambient noisy is present. We were in transit and this place will be on our list of where to eat.

I was happy with my lunch here. We got a couple of dishes to share and an appetizer, and it was all good. My favorite part was the pickled cabbage with the Manila pork BBQ dish. We also got general Tso chicken and fried lumpia.

This is one of the better restaurants in Union Station. Their service is efficient and consistent which is helpful if you want to catch a train. I find the fried rice particularly tasty. You can also tell them how much spice to add in the dishes and they are very accommodating. The basil based dishes are also very good. This restaurant will satisfy your Chinese/Thai cravings.
